Networking hardware on a board falls under a type of I/O (input/output) hardware, and is responsible for transmitting data into and out of the device. In short, it is important for the reader to understand the networking relevant features of the hardware – and to use this understanding when analyzing the networking stack implementation that needs to support the particular underlying technology.
